Crape Myrtle Petals – Make 6
Foundation: Ch 7 and add wire. Starting in the second chain from the hook, follow the shaping instructions below.
Round 2: Sc, inc, work (2 hdc, dc) in the next stitch, 2 tr in the next stitch and 3 tr in the next stitch. In the last stitch work (4 tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, 4 tr). Continue along the opposite side with 3 tr in the next stitch, 2 tr in the next stitch, (dc, 2 hdc) in the next stitch, inc, sc and sl st.
Make the Petal Base
Round 3: Ch 9. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 8 sc and sl st to form the narrow petal base.
Add the Ruffled Petal Edge
Round 4: Work (ch 2, sl st in the next stitch) twice, (ch 3, sl st in the next stitch) four times, (ch 4, sl st in the next stitch) six times and (ch 5, sl st in the next stitch) ten times. Then work (ch 4, sl st in the next stitch) six times, (ch 3, sl st in the next stitch) four times and (ch 2, sl st in the next stitch) twice. Finish with 8 sc and fasten off.
Crape Myrtle Leaves – Make 3
Foundation: Ch 13.
Round 1: Add wire. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work sc, hdc, 7 dc, hdc and sc. Work 3 sc in one stitch at the tip. Along the opposite side work sc, hdc, 7 dc, hdc, sc and sl st.
Round 2: Work 11 sc, then (sc, ch 1 picot, sc) in the tip. Finish with 11 sc, sl st and fasten off.
Stamens – Make 6
Cut six pieces of wire, each about 6 inches (15 cm) long. Wrap yellow yarn around the centre of each wire for about 1 inch (2.5 cm). Fold the wire in half, wrap approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) with green yarn and secure.
Assemble the Crochet Crape Myrtle
- Wrap yellow yarn around one finger nine times.
- Cut a short piece of yarn and tie it tightly around the centre of the bundle. Double-knot it, then cut the loops.
- Insert a floral stem through the flower centre and stamens, then wrap them together with yarn.
- Arrange and attach the six petals, followed by the three leaves.
- Wrap green yarn evenly down the stem and secure the end with a small amount of glue.
Crape Myrtle Crochet Tips
- Use flexible wire so the petals and leaves can be shaped after assembly.
- Keep the chain loops loose and even to create a soft ruffled edge.
- Arrange the six petals at slightly different angles for a natural look.
- Apply glue sparingly so the wrapped stem remains neat.
